THE TORONTO FLOWER SHOPS WE’D ACTUALLY BUY FROM

Toronto has plenty of places to buy flowers. We’re more interested in the ones that make us want to buy them when nobody’s birthday is coming up.

The best flower shops in Toronto have a point of view: interesting stems, unexpected colour combinations and arrangements that don't look like they came from page three of a delivery catalogue. Whether we're bringing flowers to dinner, sending a birthday bouquet or deciding the kitchen table looks a little sad, these are the four places we'd start.

GOOD FLOWERS SHOULDN’T LOOK TOO PERFECT

We rarely choose flowers by trying to recreate one exact photo. Give a good florist a colour palette, a general mood and your budget, then let them work with whatever looks best that week. Flowers are seasonal, and that's part of what makes a really good arrangement feel different.

For a casual dinner, a wrapped bouquet is usually enough. For birthdays or a proper gift, we'd go for a vase arrangement, especially if it's being delivered. And if you need flowers today, order early — several of our favourite Toronto florists offer same-day delivery, but there are limits to what even a very talented florist can do with a birthday remembered at 4:52 p.m.

FLÙR — FOR THE DESIGN PERSON

Flùr is what happens when a flower shop has very good taste in furniture. The Annex space is equal parts floral studio and design shop, with fresh flowers sitting alongside sculptural vases, planters and objects from Canadian and international designers.

We'd come here when the person receiving the flowers will absolutely notice the vessel. There are seasonal bunches for something simple, but the custom vase arrangements are what we'd choose for a birthday, housewarming or genuinely good host gift. Flùr also does GTA delivery and store pickup, although we'd happily use the flowers as an excuse for an Annex afternoon.

WILD NORTH FLOWERS — FOR SENDING SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

Wild North is the one we'd keep bookmarked for flower delivery in Toronto. It's a private floral studio rather than a traditional walk-in shop, so everything is designed around ordering ahead, picking up or having the arrangement arrive at someone's door.

The flowers feel loose, colourful and contemporary rather than overly arranged, which is exactly what we want when we're sending something without seeing it first. They currently deliver throughout Toronto and the GTA Monday through Saturday, with same-day orders available before the morning cutoff.

This is our birthday, congratulations, new-apartment, thinking-of-you florist — basically whenever grocery-store tulips would feel slightly underdressed.

THYME STUDIO — FOR THE LESLIEVILLE FLOWER RUN

Thyme Studio is the one we'd wander into on a slow Leslieville Saturday and leave carrying something considerably more colourful than planned. The new Carlaw shop sits between Queen and Dundas and does fresh bundles, hand-tied bouquets and vase arrangements, with the flowers changing throughout the season.

Their style can move from soft and neutral to bright and slightly unexpected, so this is where we'd have a little fun with the brief rather than automatically asking for white and blush. They also offer same-day Toronto pickup and delivery, which makes Thyme particularly useful when the occasion arrived before the planning did.

We'd stop here for dinner-party flowers, a friend's birthday or a fresh bunch for home before walking back toward Queen East for coffee.

MAY FLOWERS — FOR THE BIGGER GESTURE

May Flowers is where we'd go when the flowers need to feel like an actual gift. The studio leans more polished and abundant, with bouquets and arrangements alongside larger floral work for weddings, dinners, brand events and installations.

We'd choose it for a birthday that deserves more than a wrapped bunch, an anniversary or the flowers that are supposed to be sitting on the table when someone walks into the room. Toronto delivery runs Monday through Saturday, with same-day service currently available for orders placed before noon.

Give them the occasion, a palette and enough freedom to make it good. Nobody needs to know the impressive floral gesture was organized over coffee that morning.

BUY THE FLOWERS

We'd go to Flùr when the vase matters almost as much as what's inside it, use Wild North when we're sending something beautiful across the city, stop at Thyme Studio for a colourful neighbourhood bouquet and choose May Flowers when the flowers need to make more of an entrance.

The useful rule is not to over-direct it. Find the florist whose style already looks like something you'd want to receive, give them a colour direction and budget, mention anything you absolutely hate, and let them work with what's beautiful that week.

And occasionally, skip the occasion altogether. Toronto apartments look considerably better with a slightly excessive bunch of flowers on the kitchen table.
