Facials in Toronto

WHERE WE’D ACTUALLY BOOK A FACIAL IN TORONTO

Toronto has reached the point where booking a facial can require more research than booking dinner. There are traditional hour-long facials, 30-minute high-tech treatments, lymphatic sculpting, microdermabrasion, oxygen, LED and enough variations of the word “glow” to make choosing one unnecessarily complicated.

The good news is that you don't need the most expensive treatment on the menu. The best facial in Toronto really depends on what you want your skin — and your afternoon — to get out of it. These are the places we'd consider first for four very different reasons.

START WITH WHAT YOUR SKIN ACTUALLY NEEDS

If your skin feels congested and you want proper cleansing and extractions, look for a traditional facial where those steps are actually included. If you're dry or dull before an event, hydration and gentle exfoliation may make considerably more sense than choosing the most aggressive treatment available.

Then there's the other question: do you want skincare or a spa afternoon? Formula Fig can get you through a technology-heavy facial in 30 minutes, while somewhere like Pure + Simple gives you an hour with cleansing, steam, extractions and massage. Sous La Face is more about lymphatic drainage and facial sculpting, while TOULA sits somewhere between a modern med spa and a proper facial experience. They're not interchangeable, even when all four promise very good skin.

If you're using retinoids, acids or prescription skincare, tell your aesthetician before anything exfoliating happens. We'd also avoid trying an aggressive new treatment immediately before a wedding, vacation or important event. Freshly irritated skin has impeccable timing.

PURE + SIMPLE (King West, Yorkville + Eglinton)

If a friend told us, “I just want a really good facial,” Pure + Simple is probably where we'd start. Their classic treatments still feel like actual facials rather than a collection of machines: cleansing, steam, exfoliation, extractions, masks and massage, with the treatment adjusted after looking at your skin.

The Super Hydrating Facial is $135 for 60 minutes and is an easy choice for dry or dehydrated skin, particularly once Toronto heating season begins doing what it does. It includes extractions, a hydrating face-and-neck mask, massage and oxygen. For congestion or blemish-prone skin, the Deep Down Detox is also $135; if you want more technology, treatments like Aquabrasion move up to $225 for 75 minutes.

This is also where we'd go if we weren't entirely sure what to book. The menu lets you have an aesthetician choose a natural or high-tech facial after assessing your skin instead of diagnosing yourself from six nearly identical treatment descriptions online.

FORMULA FIG (50 Ossington Ave + Summerhill + Midtown)

Formula Fig makes much more sense once you understand what it is. We wouldn't book it for a luxurious Sunday spa afternoon; we'd book it when we want something efficient, technology-heavy and easy to work into a regular skincare routine.

The entry-level Hydrate + Glow is currently $99 for a drop-in, while the All-In is $185 for 30 minutes and combines diamond-tip microdermabrasion, oxygen serum infusion, LED and a customized mix of technologies such as microcurrent, ultrasound and radiofrequency. Formula Fig also has memberships, which makes more sense if you're planning to come regularly rather than treating the facial as an occasional splurge.

The important expectation-setting is the 30-minute format. Don't come expecting a long steam, extensive manual extractions and an hour of massage. We'd choose Formula Fig when we want a polished skin reset before dinner on Ossington or consistent monthly maintenance, not when what we actually need is two hours in a robe pretending our phone doesn't exist.

SOUS LA FACE (110 Scollard St, Yorkville)

Sous La Face is the splurge on this list, but it's also doing something quite different. Its signature RRR Face is a 60-minute lymphatic sculpting treatment built around manual lymphatic drainage, buccal massage and fascia release, with the focus on depuffing and facial sculpting rather than a conventional cleanse-extract-mask routine. The current price is $259.

This is the one we'd think about before an event, after travel or whenever our face is holding onto enough puffiness to make us question yesterday's sodium intake. There are more elaborate versions that add brightening or other skin treatments, but they jump to $450+, so we'd start with the signature unless there's a very specific reason not to.

We also wouldn't choose Sous La Face primarily for blackheads or acne extractions. The hands-on sculpting is the reason to come here, and if that's not what you want, Toronto has considerably less expensive ways to get a good facial.

TOULA (144 Portland St, King West)

TOULA is the newer option we'd look at when we want results-driven skincare without giving up the relaxing part of having a facial. The King West studio combines skin analysis with treatments that can use technologies like oxygen infusion, microdermabrasion and customized LED, depending on the facial and what your skin needs.

Rather than one facial supposedly fixing everything, the menu is divided by concern. The Hydrating Facial is $225 for 50 minutes and requires no consultation, while the Brightening Facial is $235 and is designed around dullness, uneven tone and pigmentation. TOULA says the hydrating treatment has no expected downtime, which makes it one we'd consider before a weekend when we'd like good skin without spending the following two days hiding from everyone we know.

It's more of an investment than Pure + Simple, but the combination of technology and a longer, more considered appointment makes sense for someone who finds Formula Fig a little too quick and a traditional facial a little too basic.

THE FACIAL WE’D BOOK DEPENDS ON THE DAY

For a first facial or a proper cleanse, extractions and hydration, we'd start with Pure + Simple. If skincare is already part of the monthly calendar and 30 efficient minutes sounds better than an afternoon at the spa, Formula Fig makes more sense.

We'd save Sous La Face for facial massage, lymphatic sculpting and the kind of pre-event appointment where depuffing is the priority. TOULA is the middle ground we'd choose when we want a more luxurious appointment but still care about devices and targeted skin results.

The biggest mistake is booking based on whichever treatment name sounds most expensive. Check what the facial actually includes, tell the aesthetician what you're using at home and be specific about what you want to improve. Good skin is considerably less mysterious once everyone stops pretending “glow” is a diagnosis.
